Teen Book + Summer Get-out Activity

Having my kids growing up has been great. I haven’t changed a diaper or thought about naptime in years. But as they get older a lot of summer activities they used to do have become way less cool…

“Want to go to the park?” (groan)

“Let’s go on a bike ride!” (moan)

“Who wants to play in the driveway with chalk.” (eyeroll)

So for all of you in the eyeroll stage with me, I just had to share my recent discovery of Brandon Sanderson’s YA novel, RITHMATIST.

Brandon Sanderson's book, Rithmatist

Basically, Rithmatists have the power to make chalk-drawing magic, and they use this power to save the inhabitants of an alternate-universe America.

Sanderson superfans (i.e. my brothers) would tell you that it’s maybe not Sanderson’s best, but it’s still a fun, clean, fantasy novel that’s approachable for younger audiences not ready for his more epic work. My teen and preteen boys have all devoured it within the last two weeks.

And now… they’re drawing “chalkilings” all over my driveway which is loads of fun:

So, if you’re looking to lure your “kiddos” back out to the driveway with you, pick up the book and a bucket of chalk and be prepared for them to draw circles around you.
